Hi all,

I just wanted to forward information about events next week with Mike Bottini and Juliana Duryea, two of the wildlife biologists who conducted the otter research in March.  I hope you will be able to attend one or both events.  In addition, Mike offered to lead a trip by kayak (byo kayak) on Middle Farms pond on Wednesday afternoon.  If you might be interested in that, please let me know.

We will be sending out a spiffier flyer to members tomorrow, as well as posting around the island, on our website, and on the FI.net home page.  Stay tuned…

All the best,

Jane

Learn about the charismatic river otter, nick-named the "ambassador of wetlands" in this one hour  presentation that covers what is known about this secretive animal's habitats, adaptations, diet, and unique reproductive biology, as well as some of the otter's interesting mysteries that remain unsolved. We will also discuss the results of the March 2013 survey of river otters on Fishers Island and the larger environmental context of this research.

Field Trip: Searching for Otters

River otters have very large home ranges, are constantly on the move, and are very nocturnal, making then very difficult to find and observe. Learn some of the tricks that biologists use to survey for this elusive creature, as we visit several known otter "sites" on Fishers Island to look for their sign.
Details:
Meet at the Community Center at 8:45 a.m. – carpools will be arranged from there.
Children 10 and up may take part, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
